This year, you may have noticed some young squash players in bright yellow t-shirts running around the courts or doing schoolwork in our lounge areas. These kids are members of Seattle Urban Squash, our official nonprofit partner. Seattle Urban Squash selects deserving students from underserved backgrounds and gives them access to a free program that combines squash, academic tutoring, and community service to help them succeed in school and in life.
Seattle Urban Squash is powered exclusively through donations by supportive community members such as yourself. They will be holding their annual gala dinner on June 3 at Ray’s Boathouse. This fun event will feature gourmet food, live music, and the chance to party it up with your fellow SAC members for a great cause. Help us support this organization and all that they do by purchasing a ticket today. All members are encouraged to attend and are most welcome.

Those of you who have spent any amount of time here in the early morning know Ethan Kelly.
He has been a dedicated member at the club, pretty much since it’s inception. He’s the guy who always has a smile on at 5 am and is front and center at 6:30- yoga, that is after he’s run a bazillion miles or taken a spin class!
Ethan has a special kind of cool, it’s that gentle, easy-going cool that rubs off on everyone in close proximity. He is super warm, super nice and super strong. He’s the kind of guy you want in your corner routing for you, which is why he has so many fans here at the club. His biggest fan is his amazing wife, Connie Kelly. One of the many things I admire about Ethan is how loving and dedicated he is to Connie, a true gentleman.
The reason we nominated him this month is to highlight how inspiring he truly is. Ethan had a bout of really serious appendicitis a couple months ago. So serious in fact, that his dedication and athleticism was put to the test and it paid off in full. He spent a lengthy stay at the hospital and came out swing’n! After loosing a good deal of weight, Ethan got right back on that horse and started riding! By the time you are reading this, I’m sure he will be back at his normal healthy weight and training for some sort of marathon! That kind of ability, the ability to move ahead and embrace the present is rare and Ethan has it. I want to thank him for being part of my life and my community here at the Seattle Athletic Club. I know I speak for many of us when I say “We Love You, Ethan!”
November’s Inspirational Member of the Month, Ethan Kelly
Two of our masters athletes – Mariza Ohlsson and Naveen Garg, travelled to Nice, France to participate in 2015 European Masters Games (Oct 1 – 11, 2015) that included 27 sports disciplines (http://emg-nice2015.fr/en/sports-disciplines/) spread over 40 venues with over 7200 athletes from 25 years to 96 years of age!
Mariza participated in Squash and Table Tennis events where as Naveen focused on both Classic and Open Squash events. Mariza played 4 matches and won 2, including a hard fought 5 set win that earned her the Bronze in the combined Women’s Squash Classic draw along with Gold in her age category! Naveen played a total of 9 matches, winning all 5 in the classic division with Gold Medal and winning 3 of 4 in the professional division with eventual 5th place. His only loss of the tournament was a close 2-3 loss to the eventual silver medalist.
The atmosphere that these two experienced was not unique to the event. Squash as a sport that is welcoming and inviting for most. As Mariza explains the experience, “The camaraderie among squash players is unique among sports. And we were shown the very best, even an invitation to dinner from one of the local players to his house on the hillside with a magnificent view.”
Congratulations to both Mariza and Naveen for representing the Seattle Squash Community in France this year.
The warmer summer months are almost here in Washington; which means there will be a lot of water activities that you and your family can enjoy. In order to ensure that everyone is a safe boater here are some guidelines from The Official Boating Handbook of the Washington State Parks and a list of the most frequently violated water laws:
REGISTRATION: All Personal Watercraft must be registered with the State of Washington and the operator must have available for inspection the vessel registration (similar to a car registration).
SPEEDING: Vessels are limited to a maximum speed of 7 nautical miles per hour (8mph): within 100 yards of any shoreline, pier, shore installation or restricted area in Lake Washington. Within 200 yards of any shoreline upon Puget Sound. Upon all the waters of Lake Union, Portage Bay, Union Bay and the Lake Washington Ship Canal from Shilshole Bay to Webster Point.
PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE (PFD): Operators and passengers must wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device or life vest.
VESSEL NUMBERING: All Personal Watercraft must have registration numbers, in contrasting colors, displayed on both sides of the forward section of the hull. (A yearly decal must be displayed in conjunction with the numbers).
AGE LIMITS: The operator of a Personal Watercraft must be at least 14 years of age. It is unlawful for a person to lease, hire or rent a Personal Watercraft to any person under 16 years of age.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER: Every Personal Watercraft must be equipped with a Fire Extinguisher (usually carried in a compartment at the rear of the machine).
NEGLIGENT OPERATION: Operating a vessel in a manner so as to endanger or likely endanger any person or property or operate at a rate of speed greater than will permit him/her to exercise reasonable care or control of the vessel. (Such as wake jumping too close to boats, speeding too close to other vessels, the shoreline, swimming beaches or launch ramps).
MUFFLER: It is unlawful to operate any engine on the waters of the city of Seattle without a muffler or silencer of sufficient size to prevent excessive or unusual noise from the exhaust of the engine.
HOURS OF OPERATION: Personal Watercraft may be operated from sunrise to sunset.
RULES OF THE ROAD: On Seattle waters, all vessels must comply with the International Rules for Preventing Collisions at Sea
SAFETY TIPS:
Use protective equipment: Wear your PFD but also use eye protection, gloves and deck shoes. A wet suit will help protect against hypothermia.
Use care when wake jumping. Stay well clear of other vessels. Wake jumping produces a large percentage of the complaints of negligence directed at personal watercraft operators. It also accounts for a number of injuries incurred by personal watercraft operators.
Don’t Drink and Ride: Alcohol and drugs affect your judgment. The added affect of sun and physical exertion compounds the effects of alcohol and increases your risk of being involved in an accident.
Whistle: Carry a whistle for signaling and warning.
Tow Rope: Store a long rope in good condition on the vessel.
Lanyard: Wear the kill-switch safety Lanyard when operating your personal watercraft (PWC). The Lanyard attaches to the operator and the vessel to automatically shut off the engine if the operator is separated from the craft.
Take a boating safety course offered by organizations such as the Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron.
LEARN SAFETY:
Irresponsible acts by a few operators and careless operation by new or uninformed riders and owners have resulted in numerous boating accidents throughout Washington State. Most of these accidents involve injuries and some have resulted in death. Accidents involving Personal Watercraft have almost doubled in the last few years.
Lisa Huisingh has been with the club for over 6 years now. In that time, she has touched so many lives here, from members to guests to fellow coworkers. She is caring, compassionate and is not afraid to help wherever she is needed.
Over the years, she has become an integral part of the events committee, helping to plan and decorate many of the social activities the club hosts throughout the year, she is willing to step up when others are in need and lends the caring shoulder.
Lisa is a perfect example of our mission statement as she strives to make each person’s day as best as she can.

Effective meal-planning must encompass the nights when things blow up and you need to get dinner on the table for yourself and/or your family in 15 minutes or less. If we have the right ingredients on hand we can always have a meal back-up plan.
Below is a list of some of my favorite 15-minute meal ingredients. I’ve separated them into Proteins, Starches and Vegetables. A healthy meal can combine all these into a well-portioned “balanced plate”: ¼ protein, ¼ starch and ½ vegetables.
Quick Proteins (1/4 of plate):
Leftovers or Rotisserie Chicken, Precooked Chicken Sausage (Adele’s or Trader Joes), Precooked Turkey Kielbasa, Canned & Rinsed LS Beans, Eggs, Tofu, Frozen Edamame, Precooked Veggie or Salmon Patties, Canned Tuna or Salmon, Frozen Turkey Meatballs
Quick Starches (1/4 of plate):
Frozen Microwaveable Rice, Microwaved Sweet or Russet Potato, Frozen Peas or Corn, Roast a bag of pre-cut Squash, Sweet Potato or Fingerling Potatoes, Microwaved Spaghetti Squash, Frozen Grain Blends, Couscous (takes 5 minutes to cook), Quinoa or White Rice (15 minutes to cook),Whole wheat pitas/tortillas/bread
Quick Vegetables (1/2 of plate):
Frozen: Broccoli, Asparagus, Pepper Strips, Brussel Sprouts, Frozen Specialty Blends with or without Sauce (Trader Joes has a lot of interesting blends), Bag of Broccoli Slaw (Add raisins/craisins, sunflower seeds and poppy seed dressing), Bag of prewashed & cut veggies (Green beans, mini zucchini, cucumbers, snap peas, baby carrots, mushrooms, specialty mixes), Bagged Fresh Lettuce: Romaine, Spinach, Mixed Greens (Add shredded bagged carrot, grape tomatoes, pre-sliced mushrooms)

Next time you meal plan – buy the ingredients for a quick meal as a back-up. An example would be a flavored pre-cooked Adell’s chicken sausage, a box of couscous and a new frozen vegetable blend. These ingredients will keep for weeks/months – and you’ll always have a quick meal on hand – and avoid the pitfalls of dining out.
