Cure the Winter Blues and Increase Your Energy During the Winter Months

The northwest is known for cold, wet weather during the winter months. Don’t let the weather be an excuse to avoid training. In fact, you can cure the winter blues and increase your energy by maintaining your workout routine during the winter months. In addition, moderate exercise can bolster your immune system, which means less sick time during flu season.

The best way to stay motivated to exercise is to choose activities that inspire you. If you can’t find the exact activity indoors, take this opportunity to maintain your fitness level during the winter months by trying something new. A great way to mix up your routine is to add group exercise classes to your workout.

The idea behind group exercise is to enhance all health related components of fitness under the guidance of a qualified group exercise instructor. These components include cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. A typical group exercise class is 60 minutes long and consists of a warm-up, cardiorespiratory segment and/or muscular strength and endurance segment, core work, cool-down and stretching.

Seattle Athletic Club Downtown offers a variety of free classes that cater to all levels and abilities. If you are looking to shape your body and maintain muscle tone, a BODYPUMP, Power Sculpt or Yoga class would be a great option. If you would like to maintain your cardiovascular fitness a Power Cycle, Cardio Blast or Zumba class would benefit you. If you would like to maintain flexibility a Focus on Flexibility class in the Mind/Body studio would be a great option. Whatever your needs may be, you have the variety you are looking for in Group Exercise classes.

It’s easy to get started. Pick up a Group Exercise & Cycle Schedule and a Mind/Body schedule at the front desk or on-line and decide what classes suit your needs. Once you decide on the classes that will motivate you to succeed give them a try! Make sure to introduce yourself to the instructor at the beginning of class and ask any questions you may have. In addition, make sure to wear proper attire and footwear. Lastly, make sure you are well hydrated before, during and after class.

The key to your success is in your hands. Make this winter the best ever by maintaining your fitness level, trying something new and having fun while doing it!
